The Great Debate of Fate
On 26 June 2013, Julia Gillard called a leadership spill, deciding to counteract any challenge. After hearing this, Rudd announced that he would challenge the Prime Minister. The stakes? Gillard clearly states whoever the loser of the ballot should retire from politics; in which Rudd agreed that this would be appropriate.
Governor-General Quentin Bryce commissioned Rudd within half an hour of Parliament resuming for what is likely to be its last day before elections.
"I will do my absolute best," Rudd states to Bryce, whom he appointed Governor-General when he was last Prime Minister.
After that, the election began and Rudd overcame Gillard by 57-45 ballot votes. He then took this opportunity to reform his party with fresh new members and making strong decisions like replacing Treasurer and Deputy Leader Wayne Swan with Anthony Albanese. Rudd is yet to announce his complete Cabinet after seven ministers resigned following Gillard's defeat.
While Rudd has the support of his party, he does not necessarily have the support of a majority of lawmakers in the 150-seat House of Representatives, which a Prime Minister must have.
On June 27 2013, Kevin Rudd was sworn in as Prime Minister by Quentin Bryce. Anthony Albanese was also sworn in as Deputy Prime Minister and Chris Bowen has been sworn in as Treasurer.
