Dae Jang Geum
Dae Jang Geum is a traditional Korean restaurant situated in Cabramatta. It sells traditional Korean foods like naengmyun (cold noodle soup) and jajangmyun (black bean sauce noodles). The restaurant stick to Korean customs with various side dishes such as kimchi and barley tea.
The atmosphere of the restaurant is quite cosy and calm. It is a very relaxed environment. There is a TV that plays Korean music and the walls have Korean writing wallpaper. There is also a separate wall where you can sign your name and draw a picture.
The staff of the restaurant are also very friendly. They will come to you and give you the menus before leaving and coming back to get your order. The waitresses are sociable and kind. Some might even compliment you (I speak from experience).
The food is delicious and plentiful. We ordered four dishes and we were extremely full and satisfied. We ordered fried dumplings, chicken teriyaki, black bean sauce noodles and dumpling soup with rice pasta slices. We also had side dishes like kimchi (fermented vegetable, seasoned with garlic). Most of the dishes are not vegetarian friendly but if you eat meat then this place has plenty.
Our first dish was the fried dumplings. They had a crispy outer layer and a flavoursome filling. The filling is made with pork, leek and some other seasonings. The dipping sauce that comes with it is quite chilly so don’t dunk the whole thing in there.
Our next dish was the chicken teriyaki. The chicken was boneless and extremely soft. The chicken marinade was beautifully flavoured. It was a perfect balance of sweetness and saltiness. The chicken was served with rice and salad.
The third dish we had was jajangmyun (black bean sauce noodles). The rice noodles were slightly chewy but in the good way. It is soft and doesn’t stick to your teeth. The sauce is thick and has a flavour that appears a lot in Asian cuisine. The sauce tastes slightly similar to oyster sauce combined with hoisin sauce (black bean paste).
The final dish we ordered was the dumpling soup with rice pasta slices. The rice pasta slices had a similar consistency to the rice noodles in jajangmyun. The broth was slightly bland with no particular flavor. The dumplings were extremely soft and its filling was salty. There were also vegetables that supposedly contributed to the flavor of the broth.
We personally all liked the restaurant and would definitely return for another meal. We would recommend this place to people who want to try something different from their daily meals. The staff are extremely friendly and the atmosphere is very humble and cosy.
Atmosphere: 8/10 Staff: Kind and helpful Food (overall): 9/10
